Along
with natural ventilation the use of natural daylight is both
environmentally responsible and practical. The Velodrome
daylight system diffuses sunlight through the large roof
skylight to the interior during daylight hours. The
ventilation and and daylight system is controlled by the
Velodrome Environment and Building System Management
computer via arrays of small actuator driven louvres mounted
within the roof, below the ceiling and around the base of
the building. This system maintains optimal comfort
conditions within the Velodrome while constantly monitoring
external effects such as sky luminance, wind strength and
direction, air temperature, humidity etc.
The
Velodrome thus exceeds the highest standards of
Architectural, Urban and Environmental design required by
the community. The importance of the Velodrome as an Olympic
venue demands a design which has a memorable image that is
instantly recognisable and possess a highly distinctive
character. As the dominant structure in the vicinity its
domed roof will act as an urban marker, identifying this as
a place of sporting activity and the centre of excellence
for Australian Cycling.
