AIA Honor Awards from Hong Kong Chapter of The American Institute of
Architects |
HONG
KONG, 30 November 2000--AIA Hong
Kong was established in 1997 as an overseas chapter of The American
Institute of Architects to serve the professional interests of over 125
U.S. trained architects practising in Hong Kong--more than in any other
city outside the United States.
Each
year, AIA Hong Kong
recognizes design excellence in architecture and interior design for
works completed by AIA member architects in Hong Kong, China and the
Asia Pacific Region. For
the 2000 Design Awards Program, one Honor Award and five Merit Awards
will be presented to the following:

A
new residential community of over 400 units in the historic city of
Suzhou, famous for its canal system�the designers have rationalised
the traditional house form and construction to give a simple and elegant
expression for the modern house�a timeless expression to the
relationship between courtyard and water has been treated with
particular sensitivity. |

A historic
restoration of a mountaintop complex of Chinese monastery-style
structures built in the 1930s by Christian missionaries from Norway�a
strong traditional character has been secured by sensitive conservation
work�the architects have taken great care in the reconstructed roofs,
the detail and decoration, as well as the surrounding landscape.

A
headquarters office building with seaside views overlooking the
passenger terminal and runways�.a building of simplicity and
directness�a simple expression of primary and secondary structure set
under a generous curved roof�a state of the art glass wall is employed
as a means of controlling the noise, tempering the harsh climate and
presenting an elegant image. |

office renovation for Arups, an international engineering
consultancy�an assured and generous
piece of interior architecture�wide swing doors become walls and the
choice of materials gives a real sense of quality without being
showy�offices are set around an atrium which gives a focus to the
large space but also gives the organization a physical form.

�incubation center� office renovation for small start-up technology
business�this interior has to satisfy a range of young companies
working in a new e.com way�here leisure and work intertwine and the
light, almost temporary edge to the atmosphere seemed absolutely right
for the young.

An office renovation on three floors for a multinational advertising
agency�
the designers had made a very elegant and dynamic architectural
insertion [which]
appears to fit inside the rest of the space that is expressed as a good
hard-working environment�there is a real sense of excitement in the
space.

This
year�s design jury was assembled among the following distinguished
architects: Richard
Frewer, RIBA, chair
professor and head of the architecture department of the University of
Hong Kong and the jury chair; Kenneth
Maynard, FAIA, principal
of UKSH, Inc. in Anchorage, Alaska, and Regional Director of the AIA
Northwest and Pacific Region; and Anthony
Ng, FHKIA RIBA Hon AIA/HK,
Managing Director of Anthony Ng Architects Ltd., in Hong Kong.
AIA member Alfred Yeung, RIBA
Assoc.AIA, served as the professional advisor to the jury.
The
design jury commended the high overall quality of the 34 projects which
were all submitted as unidentified entries.
The jury noted that �there will always be work of high
competence, but if an award is to be given, it must be seen to be making
a contribution to the art of architecture.
The awards are an opportunity for clients and the general public
to see the quality of work being carried out in the profession.� A
public exhibition of all AIA Hong Kong Design Award entries will be on view at the Rotunda in
Exchange Square, Hong Kong, from 2 to 10 February 2001.
