Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank . bank building.GIF (18559 bytes)
The
Bank building stands at the head of Statue Square, one of the most spectacular sites in the Colony, presiding over the only substantial open space in the central business district and overlooking a 400-metre stretch of level land leading to the waterfront. Steep granite rock formations rise up behind, culminating in the Hong Kong Peak. The building is suspended from pairs of steel masts, arranged in three bays. At five points up the building, the masts are connected by two-storey trusses from which the floor clusters are suspended, diminishing from eight
storeys at the base to four storeys at the top. The bays, too, rise to varying heights: 28 storeys, 35 storeys and 41 storeys. This staggered profile creates interior spaces of varying width and depth, garden terraces and sculpted east and west elevations.
