Steelcase LeapTM  Chair Backgrounder
About the LeapTM Chair

Leap is a new technology, a new chair, which provides a healthier way to sit.

Developed by Steelcase in response to four years of research on spinal motion and    back support in conjunction with the University of Vermont, Michigan State University and Cornell University. The research for the Leap chair involved I I studies, 732 test participants and 27 scientists.

  According to the Occupational Safet
y and Health Administration, back pain is a disability that currently costs employers $20 billion in workers' compensation costs annually and $60 billion in indirect costs, including lost productivity. Second only to the common cold as a cause of worker absenteeism according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, back pain accounts for more than 40% of all occupational injuries in the United States that results in days away from work.

Research team's' composed of Steelcase researchers, physical therapists and ergonomists  identified the need for motion and for support of the natural curve of the lower back as critical  to maintaining healthy posture and minimizing back strain when sitting over long periods of time.

Leap offers seating technology that conform to each person's unique spinal motion, instead  of the individual having to conform to the contours of the chair. Leap supports both the upper  and lower back, which move in opposite directions when a person is,sitting.

The Leap chair is covered by 23 issued and pending patents.

The Leap chair has 90 different variations in styles and features, offering the customer multiple options.

Leap technology promises benefits wherever people sit for extended periods office, car, airplane or symphony hall. Steelcase is willing to make Leap technology available via license to organizations and individuals.
